About Berrien Hills Nature Preserve

Berrien Hills Nature Preserve is a protected natural area encompassing approximately 138 acres of woodlands, rolling hills, and creek valleys in Berrien County, Michigan. The preserve is characterized by its forested hills and valleys, providing habitat for a variety of native plants and wildlife species. It showcases mixed hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and hickory, alongside pockets of pine and cedar. Small streams and ravines run through the property, contributing to its ecological diversity. Originally purchased and conserved by the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, the preserve was established to protect this unique section of the local landscape and provide outdoor recreational opportunities for the community. Hiking is the primary activity on-site, with several miles of well-marked trails offering moderate to challenging terrain, including steep climbs and descents. The highest points in the preserve provide panoramic views across the surrounding countryside, making it an appealing destination for nature lovers and photographers. Though no formal camping facilities exist within the preserve, it is popular for day visits, wildlife observation, and seasonal birdwatching. Its proximity to other regional parks and preserves makes it a valuable component of Berrien County's network of green spaces. Educational programs and guided hikes are occasionally offered by local conservation organizations, enhancing visitor understanding of the area's natural history and conservation efforts. Visitors can expect a tranquil natural setting evocative of southwestern Michigan’s rolling hill country and deciduous forests.
